"Into the Woods": July 6 to 11

"Into the Woods," which runs from July 6 to 11, is a Tony Award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The story intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them, to explore the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Rapunzel" and "Cinderella," as well as several others. The musical is tied together by an original story involving a childless baker and his wife, and their quest to begin a family, including their interactions with a witch who has placed a curse on them, and other storybook characters during their journey. The Disney movie adaptation of "Into the Woods," starring Meryl Streep, was released in December 2014.

"Chicago": July 20 to 25

Broadway's longest-running American musical revival, "Chicago," which runs July 20 to 25, is a Prohibition-era based satire that tells the story of two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in Cook County jail. Nightclub star Velma is serving time for killing her husband and sister after finding the two entangled. Driven chorus girl Roxie has been tossed in the joint for bumping off her lover. Not one to rest on her laurels, Velma enlists the help of prison matron Mama Morton and slick lawyer Billy Flynn, who turn Velma's incarceration into a murder-of-the-week media frenzy, thus preparing the world for a splashy showbiz comeback. Roxie, however, has some of her own tricks in store. This universal tale of fame and fortune is brimming with show-stopping songs and mesmerizing dance numbers, earning six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy.
