AIKEN, SC (08/20/2018) Ace, the mascot for the University of South Carolina Aiken, greeted members of the inaugural cohort of Aiken Scholars Academy on their first day of class.
This year marks the beginning of this high school model, now located at USC Aiken
"We are thrilled to have Aiken Scholars Academy students joining us this year," said Dr. Sandra Jordan, chancellor. "We enthusiastically welcome ASA students to USC Aiken, a special community of scholars at all levels, including each of them."
"Our campus is small enough that it will soon feel like a second home, where everyone knows their name, but big enough that they can pursue a wide range of interests.
"USC Aiken's faculty, staff and students look forward to working with ASA teachers to design challenging, engaging and rewarding high school, and college, experiences for these students."
The first two years, Aiken County Public School educators will teach ASA scholars. Their freshmen and junior high school years, the students will be fully immersed into USC Aiken courses. When they graduate from high school, ASA students will already have some college credits.
"Before you know it, they will be fully immersed in USC Aiken classrooms, where they will conduct relevant research, explore new perspectives, and share their insights," Jordan said.
"The USC Aiken faculty, who are leaders in their fields, look forward to these students' contributions to their classrooms and research laboratories."
Jordan adds that Aiken Scholars Academy students can take advantage of all this unique learning opportunity affords them, even during their first two years. The library staff is standing by to support their research efforts, and they can brainstorm together as they prepare presentations or study for exams in the Learning Commons area in the Gregg-Graniteville Library. If needed, they can visit with math or subject-specific tutors or drop in on the Writing Room for assistance with big term papers.
"The university students, faculty, and staff will continue to explore ways of making the resources, service opportunities, and activities at USC Aiken a part of the ASA experience," Jordan says.
