Air National Guard Senior Airman Francisco Vierapereira, a Huntington Station resident, receives scholarship

GABRESKI AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY (08/11/2015)(readMedia)-- New York Air National Guard Senior Airman Francisco Vierapereira, a Huntington Station resident, has received a $500 scholarship from the 106th Rescue Wing Alumni Association, a group comprised of former members of the 106th Rescue Wing.

Vierapereira is a member of the 106th Civil Engineering Squadron and is a senior at Long Island University where he is majoring in Physical Therapy. Along with his duties at the 106th Rescue Wing, Vierapereira volunteers with the Special Olympics of New York and coaches wrestling.

The alumni group also presented scholarship to Kevin William, the son of retired New York Air National Guard Master Sgt. Don Williams, a resident of Mattituck.

Williams is a 2015 graduate of Mattituck High School and will be attending High Point University, in North Carolina. There, he will be studying Business Entrepreneurship.

The two received the Command Master Sgt. William A Shiffer Memorial College Scholarship during an August 2, 2015 event from Retired Col. Robert Landsiedel, President of the 106th Rescue Wing Alumni Association.

The scholarship recognizes academic achievements and community involvement.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be attending, or enrolled with intent on attending, in an accredited college or university for the upcoming fall semester. College and high school students who apply must hold a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants also have to be either a 106th Rescue Wing member, a dependent, unmarried child or grandchild of an active or retired member of the 106th Rescue Wing, or 106th Rescue Wing Alumni Association. Those who have already completed a 4 year degree, or graduates degree, are not eligible to apply.

The Alumni Association presents the awards each to support the ongoing education of unit members and past/present family members of wing personnel.
