STEWART AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, NEWBURGH, NY (10/19/2016)(readMedia)-- New York Air National Guard Technical Sergeant John A. Scarano, a Newburgh resident and a member of the 105th Airlift Wing, has been named a 2016 Orange County Rising Star by Leadership Orange and the Junior League of Orange County.

Scarano was one of four members of the 105th Airlift Wing, which is based at Stewart Air National Guard Base, who was recognized during an Oct. 6 event.

The award recognizes individuals between the ages of 21 and 40 who live, work or volunteer in Orange County, New York and are up-and-coming leaders in their professional and volunteer lives.

Leadership Orange is a country-wide program to train and develop leaders. The Junior League of Orange County, NY, Inc. is part of an international organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Scarano, who is a 2000 graduate of Washingtonville Senior High School, is a member of the 105th Airlift Wing's recruiting team. He also implements publicity and community relations programs for the wing throughout the local area.

Scarano, who joined the wing in 2006, also sits on the 105th Airlift Wing's First Six Council Board, which organizes and implement numerous activities throughout the year. These include the 105th Airlift Wing's first ever Winter Coat Drive which donated over 200 coats to the local community.

He has also acted as a moderator and facilitator of the 105th Airlift Wings Speed Mentoring events and has executed numerous base morale outings for 105th members and their families.

Scarano was twice selected as a Hometown Hero for the win and was the 105th Force Support Squadron's Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year, and the 2015 New York State Production Recruiter of the Year.

His military awards include the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Scarano has two Community College of the Air Force degrees, the first in Aviation Maintenance Technology and the second in Human Resource Management.

He will be receiving his bachelor's degree in Organizational Management from Mercy College in the spring of 2017, with plans to pursue his graduate degree in Human Resources.

Scarano resides in Newburgh, NY with his wife Jennifer.
