HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (03/08/2012)(readMedia)-- On Tuesday, March 6, 2012, Alexander Chase Cartwright, a junior at Hampden-Sydney College, was elected Chairman of the Student Court for the 2012-2013 academic year.

A Madison Scholar, Alex serves as President of the Pre-Law Society, as 1st Reviewer of the Union-Philanthropic Society, as Opinion Editor of the student newspaper, The Hampden-Sydney Tiger, and as a member of the Student Court for the last two years. He is a member of the Society of '91 (leadership program), the President's Men, and the honor societies Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership), Phi Alpha Delta (law), and the Society for Collegiate Journalists. Alex was the recipient of the Samuel S. Jones Phi Beta Kappa Award at Opening Convocation in August 2011 and was recognized for leadership in the 2012 edition of Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

The judicial power of Student Government is vested in the Student Court, a body comprised of members elected by their fellow students. The court tries cases arising from breaches of the Honor Code and the Code of Student Conduct. Student government, first introduced at the College in 1886, is an historic and respected institution.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
