Alex Cartwright Honored at Hampden-Sydney College Graduation

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/14/2013)(readMedia)-- On May 12, at commencement ceremonies marking the end of the 238th academic year at Hampden-Sydney College, Alexander Chase Cartwright, Class of 2013 (right), received the Anna Carrington Harrison Award, presented by Dr. Dennis G. Stevens, Dean of the Faculty at Hampden-Sydney College. The Anna Carrington Harrison Award, a medal and cash award, is given annually as a memorial to the mother of Mr. Fred N. Harrison of Richmond. It is awarded to that student who shows the most constructive leadership in each school year.

A Madison Scholar, Cartwright served as Chairman of the Student Court, as President of the Union-Philanthropic Society, as Opinion Editor for the student newspaper, The Hampden-Sydney Tiger, and as Vice President for Hampden-Sydney Students for Liberty. He is a member of the Society of '91 (leadership program), the President's Men, and the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership), Phi Alpha Delta (law), and the Society for Collegiate Journalists. At Final Convocation in April, he received the William R. Hendley Award in Economics. Graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in mathematical economics, Cartwright is the son of Bob & Mindy Cartwright of Howard.
