Local Student Earns Three Awards at Wells College Honors Convocation

AURORA , NY (06/22/2010)(readMedia)-- Alexandra Felix, of Great Neck, was honored with three prizes at the 2010 Wells College Honors Convocation. Felix, who graduated from Wells this past May with a degree in creative writing, was awarded the Catherine B. DePau Prize (Academy of American Poets) and the Phoenix Literary Society Prize, while earning the Class of 1905 Prize in Poetry honorable mention award.

The Catherine B. Depau Prize (Academy of American Poets) is awarded by an outside judge, in this case, Charles Martin, a distinguished poet and translator who delivered this year's annual English Department Lecture, which was on his prize-winning translations of Ovid's "Metamorphoses." Felix submitted a group of poems entitled, Fireflies and Others, for which Mr. Martin awarded first place "by the way in which the emotion of the poems is supported by the specificity of the imagery. They exhibit a refreshing kind of worldliness."

The Phoenix Literary Society Prize is awarded by the Phoenix Literary Society for the best poem or prose piece published on the Phoenix Page of the Onyx, which is the student-run newspaper circulated on campus and in the surrounding community.

The Class of 1905 Prize in Poetry is awarded for the best poem or poems written by an undergraduate during the year as judged by faculty from the Department of English.
