STORM LAKE, IOWA (04/22/2014)(readMedia)-- Members of the Buena Vista University (BVU) Student Activities Board (SAB) attended the National Association for Campus Activities regional conference in St. Paul, Minn., April 3-6, where they received several awards.

The Fiesta Latina program coordinated by RAICES, a BVU student organization designed to increase the visibility and heighten the awareness of students of Latin descent, received the Celebrating the Human Spirit of Programming Award in recognition for its contribution to the understanding of multicultural populations and diversity within a campus community.

Tyson-Jay Domingo, a junior digital media major from Waipahu, Hawaii, and vice president of design for SAB, received first-place honors in the Unpaid One Color Poster Design category and was runner-up in the Unpaid Campaign Design division.

Two BVU students also presented at the conference. Alexis Williams, a sophomore corporate communication and Spanish major from Mahtomedi, Minn., and president of SAB and Carolyn McDermott, a sophomore biology major from Lincoln, Neb., and SAB vice president for advertising presented "Trick your Audience with Treats," which explored how the addition of new methods to traditional marketing approaches can increase student attendance at events.

"This event is a great opportunity for BVU's student leaders to network with peers and share what successful student organizations are doing to increase campus involvement and engagement," said Becka Neary-DeLaPorte, director of student activities and leadership at BVU. "Campus involvement and engagement definitely contribute to student success, so it was great to have such an enthusiastic team representing BVU at the conference."

Other SAB members who attended the conference were Bonnie Keller, sophomore biology and psychology double major from Sioux City; Morgan Langan, freshman biology major from O'Neill, Neb.; Kayla Lohse, sophomore corporate communications and Spanish major from Spirit Lake; Gary Blackford, sophomore computer science major from Council Bluffs; and Egypt Clayton, junior business major from Early.
