BURLINGTON, VT (08/18/2014)(readMedia)-- The 2014 Champlain College's Distinguished Citizen award goes to Mary Alice McKenzie, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington. McKenzie will receive the award from Champlain College President Donald J. Laackman and the Board of Trustees at the College's Convocation on Friday, Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. at Roger H. Perry Hall.

McKenzie will speak to the expected 662 members of the incoming Class of 2018 as part of the College's Orientation Weekend ceremonies. This is the 53rd year of the award, which honors community leaders in Vermont.

During her professional career, McKenzie has held leadership positions in both for profit and not for profit organizations in Vermont. She was President and CEO of McKenzie of Vermont from 1985 through 2000. Subsequently, McKenzie held the position of General Counsel of The Vermont State Colleges from 2001 through 2005. She also served of counsel to the law firm of Paul Frank & Collins practicing employment law until joining the Boys & Girls Club in 2007.

McKenzie has served on a number of for profit and not for profit boards of directors including Central Vermont Public Service, VELCO, Vermont Yankee, Vermont Federal Bank, the Associated Industries of Vermont and the American Meat Institute.

A Vermont native, Mary Alice Mckenzie attended Rice Memorial High School. She graduated from St. Mary's College in South Bend, Indiana, and Valparaiso University School of Law in Valparaiso, Indiana. She lives in Burlington with her husband, Allan Rodgers, and their five children.

In addition to McKenzie, the academic welcome at Convocation will include Dylan Cullen '17, president of the Student Government Association, and Professor Nancy Kerr, the 2014 Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship recipient for great teaching. Laurie Quinn, Provost and Cheif Academic Officer at Champlain College, will introduce Kerr, of Shelburne, Vt., as the most recent recipient of The Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship Award, which is awarded to a senior faculty member of the College community who has shown dedication to students and Champlain College through a record of service and excellence in teaching and advising and through work on faculty and College committees.
