Amanda Downey, of Essex Junction, Vt., Earns Honors from Allegheny College

MEADVILLE, PA (07/01/2010)(readMedia)-- Amanda Downey, daughter of Philip and Karen Downey of Essex Junction, Vt., recently completed her junior year at Allegheny College, earning honors as an Alden Scholar.

Alden Scholar awards are presented to students who maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or higher during the academic year. The awards are named in honor of the Rev. Timothy Alden Jr., who founded the college in 1815.

A neuroscience and psychology double major, Downey is completing an internship at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, this summer. Also a member of Allegheny's softball team, she earned all-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) second-team honors and was selected as an NCAC Pitcher of the Week during the 2010 season.

The 32nd oldest college in the nation, Allegheny College will celebrate its bicentennial in 2015. A selective, residential liberal arts college, Allegheny is one of 40 colleges included in Loren Pope's "Colleges That Change Lives" and also is featured in "Harvard Schmarvard: Getting Beyond the Ivy League to the College That Is Best for You" and Peterson's "Competitive Colleges, 400 Colleges That Attract the Best and the Brightest."
