Valley Amateur Radio Association talks about hobby as well as emergency communications
STAUNTON, VA (05/12/2011)(readMedia)-- The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department is collaborating with the Valley Amateur Radio Association to bring "Amateur Ham Radio 101" to the Staunton community. The class will be held on May 23rd from 6-8pm at the Staunton Public Library. It is free. This class will cover many aspects of amateur radio including equipment, licenses, rules, CW (morse code), SSB, satellite, Rtty, PSK31 and other great ways to communicate with the world and the space station. The class is free and geared for the beginner of all ages. Ham radio can be used as a hobby or for more serious operations in times of disaster when regular communication channels fail. Ham radio operators assist emergency communication efforts around the world including the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Japan. Ham radio operation requires an FCC license and this class will tell you how to get it. Alby McCutheon, past president of the VARA group will lead this discussion.
