While on the outside Lester and Carolyn Burnham are living the perfect life as the perfect husband and wife in the perfect house, inside Lester is hitting his breaking point. He is slipping into a deep depression as he becomes infatuated with his daughter's friend, Angela, who brags about her sexual escapades. While he strives for her attention, he quits his job and begins working in a fast food restaurant. Meanwhile, Carolyn and their daughter, Jane, both fall in love with other men. Jane's love, Ricky, struggles through life with a homophobic father.
The film interweaves several stories to explore several themes including love, homophobia, and happiness. "American Beauty" won a total of five Oscar awards with 86 other wins and nominations throughout the years.
