Ana Maria Archila + Finger Lakes Business Owners, Electeds, & Residents: Stop Dumping on the Finger Lakes!

LG Candidate calls on Governor and DEC to pause climate-killing cryptomining, close Seneca Meadows Landfill, & stop ignoring environmental and economic threats to NY's top agritourism region

GENEVA, NY (05/23/2022) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, Candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New York, Ana Maria Archila, will join local business owners, elected officials, residents, and activists to urge Governor Hochul and the DEC to protect the environment and economy of New York's top agritourism region. Governor Hochul and DEC have stayed mostly silent and evaded decisions regarding climate-killing cryptomining and the Seneca Meadows Landfill, two environmental crises perpetuated by out-of-state companies with far-reaching consequences for the climate, natural resources, local businesses, and human health.

Greenidge Generation, a fracked gas-burning power plant using grandfathered-in permits to run 24/7 as a Bitcoin mine, causes air, water, and noise pollution, harming the resources the local $3 billion, 60,000-job wine and tourism industry depends on. Governor Hochul and the DEC have pushed back the deadline to make a decision about Greenidge Generation's Title V Air Permit Renewal five months. The new deadline is June 30, two days after the gubernatorial primary.

Seneca Meadows Landfill, New York's biggest landfill, releases methane into the air and PFAS, a toxic chemical, into not only the local drinking water, but other locations around the state, including Buffalo, Watertown, Chittenango, and Steuben County. It was slated to close in 2025, but Waste Connections, the Texas-based company that owns it, bought two seats on the local town board and is trying to push through an extension until 2040 and a seven-story high expansion.
