Animal Face Cakes Win State Fair Awards

DES MOINES, IA (08/28/2023) (readMedia)-- Elise Parsons of Cedar Falls won first place and a behind the scenes tour for two at the Blank Park Zoo in the Animal Face Cakes contest judged Thursday, August 17, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Penelope Schelker of Pella earned second place, and Isaiah Schelker of Pella claimed third place.

Honorable mention was awarded to Kira Leith of Urbandale.

Young bakers were challenged to create a cake and decorate it as the face of an animal.

Entries were judged on appearance and originality.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
