PAUL SMITHS, NY (02/16/2012)(readMedia)-- North Country native Ann Marie Somma became vice president for business and finance at Paul Smith's College in January.
Somma was most recently the director of business affairs at SUNY Adirondack in Queensbury, where she had worked since 2009.
"I'm so happy to be back in the North Country," said Somma, who was born in Saranac Lake and raised in Malone. "Higher education is something I am very passionate about. Both my parents were educators, and the value of life-long learning is something that has been ingrained in me from an early age. This position is a perfect opportunity to not only contribute to that belief but also to help Paul Smith's achieve its financial goals as the college continues to grow."
Enrollment at Paul Smith's was 1,063 in the fall semester, the highest total in 30 years.
Somma, a certified internal auditor, earned a master of business administration degree from Siena College. She has worked for a variety of businesses and firms in New York State, including Lincoln Logs Ltd. in Chestertown, where she was controller and acting chief financial officer; Trans World Entertainment Corp. in Albany, where she was on the internal auditing and compliance team; and Navigant Consulting in New York City, where she performed forensic accounting and litigation support services.
She takes over for John Burke '78, who retired in May 2011 after 33 years at the college.
"Ann Marie is a skilled financial professional who has proven herself at several organizations in the public and private sector," said John W. Mills, president of Paul Smith's College. "We're very pleased to have her on board."
