STANDISH, ME (05/02/2012)(readMedia)-- Anthony Richards of Brunswick, Maine, earned the Sister Dolores Sablone Award at Saint Joseph's College in Standish, given to a senior in the communications major based on service, academic performance and promise for future professional attainment. Richards also earned the Exceptional Achievement in Academic Service Learning Award, which recognizes a student who demonstrates outstanding participation, commitment, and academic performance in service learning projects. He will graduate with distinction in May.
Richards is a returning Iraqi combat veteran who combines Reserve duties, employment, and academics as he completes his college degree. He is part of a team of senior communication students who are working with the Frannie Peabody House to develop a hepatitis-C education program for at-risk people in the Portland area (drug abusers, homeless, etc.) He has taken a lead role in working with the Peabody team to create a distinctive and unique logo that will be used in an upcoming public education--print materials, posters and brochures. He has successfully used his academic multimedia coursework to produce exceptional design materials for Peabody House, and advanced Web and video materials for Riding to the Top (a therapeutic riding program in Windham). Richards wants to work in the area of Web/graphic design, and his service learning work demonstrates a superior ability to link pre-professional and academic endeavors.
Saint Joseph's College of Maine offers traditional, 4-year bachelor's degrees to students at its southern Maine campus on Sebago Lake and online undergraduate and graduate programs to working adults throughout the country. www.sjcme.edu
