Anthony V. Cardona

1941 – 2011

ALBANY, NY (12/04/2011)(readMedia)-- "The New York State Bar Association is deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Anthony V. Cardona, Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, Third Department," said New York State Bar Association President Vincent E. Doyle III.

"Justice Cardona's death represents a great loss not only to the legal community, but to all New Yorkers. He leaves a legacy of rigorous scholarship, high ethical standards and respect for the rights of all people.

"Gregarious, friendly, warm and welcoming, his regard and enthusiasm for our system of justice was infectious. He spoke as eloquently and compassionately to school children as he did to people who appeared in his courtroom."

Justice Cardona was recognized by the New York State Bar Association with prestigious honors: the Howard A. Levine Award, presented by the Committee on Children and the Law in 1997, for his outstanding work to improve New York's child welfare and juvenile justice systems; and the Ray of Hope Award, presented by the Committee on Lawyer Assistance in 2009, for his compassion in helping colleagues suffering from alcoholism, depression and other mental health problems.

"We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Justice Cardona's wife, Aline, children, extended family, colleagues and friends," Doyle added.
