Anti-Tobacco Advocates, African American Leaders to Rally Ahead of Flavored E-Cigarette Vote
Coalition of more than 100 organizations call on Council Members to vote 'yes' on Tuesday for flavored e-cigarette ban, demand Council schedule vote to restrict menthol cigarette sales
NEW YORK, NY (11/25/2019) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, elected officials, parents, and advocates including Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte, will rally at City Hall ahead of the City Council's vote on legislation to ban flavored e-cigarettes in New York City, calling on Council Members to both pass the bill and to call another vote on delayed legislation to restrict the sale of menthol cigarettes.
Big Tobacco has aggressively marketed flavored tobacco products to young people for decades to hook new generations of smokers--particularly in communities of color, where the use of menthol cigarettes has led to disproportionately negative health outcomes for African Americans. More than 80% of kids who have used tobacco started with a flavored product like menthol, bubblegum or cotton candy.
The bills are supported by a coalition of more than 100 local and national organizations and leaders -- called Flavors Hook Kids NYC -- including the N.Y. NAACP, former Mayor David Dinkins, Rep. Gregory Meeks, the American Lung Association and others.
