Area Student "Mathletes" Win Regional Math Competition at SUNY Delhi

DELHI, NY (02/17/2011)(readMedia)-- The team from Boynton Middle School of Ithaca won the regional finals of the annual Mathcounts competition held at SUNY Delhi February 5.

Winning Boynton team members are: Daniel Halpern, Rishi Verma, Ravi Lal and Ronan Perry. Melissa Smith coaches the team.

Second and third place honors went to Vestal Central Middle School, coached by JoAnn D'Angelo and Cathy Jeremko, and Dewitt Middle School (Ithaca), coached by Byung-Ryool Hyun, respectively.

The three top teams now advance to the state competition at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy on March 19.

In addition to receiving award trophies, SUNY Delhi presented $1,000 in tuition scholarships to the top female and top male competitors: Soyeong Lee (Dewitt) and Daniel Halpern (Boynton). Lockheed-Martin Systems Integration of Owego provided funds for the award trophies and souvenir Mathcounts mementos for all participants.

Mathcounts is a combination math coaching and competition program for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. The Broome Area Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers sponsors the program locally. The Mathcounts program is a national effort to promote math skills among U.S. students.

National Sponsors of Mathcounts are Raytheon Company, National Defense Education Program/ Northrop Grumman Foundation, National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Foundation/ Think Fun, Texas Instruments Incorporated, and the 3M Foundation.

The National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the CNA Foundation founded Mathcounts 30 years ago. Mathcounts seeks to improve student interest and ability in mathematics. It focuses on middle school students who are at a critical stage in developing and sustaining math skills and interest.
