LATHAM, NY (12/13/2013)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Private 1st Class Tessa Marino, a Clifton Park resident and a member of the Latham-based 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade, joined 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade Command Sgt. Major Jorge Vasquez in cutting the National Guard Birthday Cake during a ceremony on Friday, Dec. 13 at Camp Buehring in Kuwait.

Traditionally the youngest Soldier present and the oldest Soldier join together to cut the cake marking the anniversary of the National Guard's founding on Dec. 13, 1636.

The 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade is currently deployed in Kuwait providing Army helicopter support to Soldiers stationed in that country.

The National Guard's claims Dec. 13, 1636 as its birthday because that is the day the Massachusetts Bay Coloney legislature formalized the militia force in law, establishing regiments for each part of the colony. The National Guard is the oldest component of the American armed forces.
