Artistry on Display in State Fair Cake Decorating Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/11/2018) (readMedia)-- The best cake decorators from across the state put their top creations to the test in the Decorated Cakes competition, judged August 6 prior to the start of the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Commercial bakers, professional adults, amateur adults and hobbyists battled in 17 different divisions.

Joyce Dunbar of Dubuque was awarded Best of Show.

Brenda Becker of Pella and Ashley Briggs of Grimes both claimed the Sweepstakes honors.

Entries were judged on execution, difficulty, general appearance, originality, design, use of edible applications and use of color.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Due to the large number of classes, Food Department judging begins prior to the Fair in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
