Brig. Gen. William D. Cobetto of Hillsboro promoted to major general

SPRINGFIELD, IL (04/08/2014)(readMedia)-- SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – William D. Cobetto of Hillsboro, Ill., Assistant Adjutant General-Air was promoted to major general by the Illinois National Guard Adjutant General Dan M. Krumrei at Camp Lincoln in Springfield, Ill., April 4.

"This is a great day for the Illinois Air National Guard and Major General Cobetto's family, friends and Airmen," said Krumrei. "He is an outstanding officer who can be counted upon to assist leading our organization through fiscal uncertainty, changing priorities and opportunities. He understands the importance of our Air National Guard to remain ready, relevant and engaged globally as a valued component of the U.S. Air Force and the State of Illinois. He is the key to the ILNG meeting our mission to help our neighbor, protect our state and defend our nation."

Cobetto is responsible for the command, control and operations of plans and programs affecting more than 3,000 Illinois Air National Guard personnel located at Scott Air Force Base, Peoria and Springfield. His extensive range of responsibilities include guaranteeing combat readiness and mission capability of three major air bases. The bases are comprised of flying wings, command and control facilities, and logistics and mission support units, providing combat trained personnel to meet all U.S. Air Force mission requirements. Cobetto also supervises a full-time force of more than 900 federal and state employees.

Cobetto received his commission in 1985 from the Academy of Military Science, Knoxville, Tenn. During his career, he served in several key positions. He directed and monitored support activities and units ensuring cohesive integration of functions and resources as the 183d Fighter Wing Mission Support Group Commander. Prior to that, he provided sound fiscal guidance as comptroller of the 183d Fighter Wing. Cobetto mobilized in 2003 and served at the Pentagon assisting the Air Force Crisis Action Team and the Secretary of the Air Force Financial Management.

"It is an honor and privilege to be promoted to major general and serve these great Illinois Airmen," said Cobetto. "I am proud of the confidence the Adjutant General has in me and the loving support my family has demonstrated over 30 years of serving in the Air National Guard."

Cobetto's wife, Kelly, assisted with the pinning ceremony along with their four children Ashley, Jacob, Adam and Emily.
