Audi allroad Returns to America with Detroit Debut

NASHUA, N.H. (01/26/2012)(readMedia)-- On hiatus from U.S. Audi dealers since 2005, the Audi allroad is making a comeback this June for the 2013 model year. Audi gave fans a glimpse of the upcoming all-weather wagon at the Detroit Auto Show in early January, showing off its modern interpretation of what a luxury family wagon should be.

Based on the Audi A4, the all-new 2013 Audi allroad features sleek styling, a bold two-tone paint job and all the luxury amenities that Audi fans expect. The allroad will replace the Audi A4 Avant wagon in the lineup, offering a slightly longer, wider and taller vehicle that provides more interior space. Of course, it will come equipped with the German automaker's quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system, which should be put to good use by New Hampshire drivers braving fierce winters.

"Some drivers want something a little bigger than the A4, but don't want to go as far as a Q5 SUV, and the Audi allroad fits that bill perfectly," said Larry Bedell, general manager of New Hampshire Audi dealership Audi of Nashua. "The wagon remains a niche purchase in the United States, but it's a very popular body shape in New Hampshire, where families want the driving dynamics of a sedan combined with the cargo capacity and winter-driving ability of a crossover."

Audi says the 2013 allroad is faster and more fuel efficient than the allroad of old, thanks to a new 2.0-liter TFSI engine producing 211 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Featuring increased ground clearance in addition to its all-wheel-drive system, the Audi allroad is well suited for traversing unplowed roads or even taking on light off-road duties. Audi also fitted the car with stainless steel skid plates and side sills to protect it from rocks and debris.

Capability aside, a wagon is only as good as its usable space, and the Audi allroad is far from lacking in that department. There are 27 cubic-feet of space available behind the back seats, a number that grows to 50 cubic-feet with those seats folded flat. By using a longer wheelbase, Audi was also able to create more headroom for the front passengers while providing a smoother ride. Meanwhile, a standard panorama sunroof ensures that all that space can be fully illuminated by natural light.

Despite its rugged tendencies, the Audi allroad is a luxury wagon at heart, which means plenty of leather, innovative technology and other smart conveniences. Available features like a 505-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system and a rolling Wi-Fi internet hotspot can be mixed in among real wood inlays and cargo tie-down cleats made of metal. Buyers also can opt for the MMI Navigation system featuring Google satellite maps and SiriusXM Traffic information to drive smarter, as well as proactive technology like adaptive cruise control, active lane assist and Audi side assist to drive safer.

"The Audi allroad doesn't just tackle any road condition; it is prepared for the surrounding environment as well, whether you're battling traffic or trying to find your way around northern New England," Bedell noted. "Ninety percent of the Audi allroad vehicles previously sold in America are still on the road, and there's little reason to think the 2013 model will be any less dependable."
