ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (09/30/2013)(readMedia)-- Virginia Lynn Moylan, author of a new book on Zora Neale Hurston, will speak at Flagler's Gamache-Koger Theater on Oct. 24.

Internationally known as an author and folklorist, Hurston was married in St. Augustine in 1927, wrote the first work about Fort Mose, and taught at Florida Memorial College in 1942.

While Hurston died in a poorhouse, her books now sell over half a million copies a year. She was buried in a grave that remained unmarked for over a decade until novelist Alice Walker paid to have a headstone put there declaring her a "genius of the South."

Moylan, 2011 recipient of the Florida Book Award Silver Medal for nonfiction, has been teaching English and literature for over 23 years. She holds a master's degree in the Foundations of Multicultural Education and is a founding member of the annual Zora Fest held in Fort Pierce, Fla. In addition to her biography, "Zora Neale Hurston's Final Decade," Moylan was a contributing author to "The Inside Light: Critical Essays on Zora Neale Hurston" and the upcoming biography of female Highwaymen painter, Mary Ann Carroll.

The free program is open to the public and takes place at 3:30 p.m. at the Gamache-Koger Theater in Flagler's Ringhaver Student Center.

The college offers 29 majors, 34 minors and two pre-professional programs, the largest majors being business, education and communication. Small by intent, Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as a satellite campus at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla. U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review regularly feature Flagler as a college that offers quality education at a relatively low cost. A Flagler education is less than half the cost of similar private colleges, and competitive with many state universities. A relatively young institution (founded in 1968), Flagler College is also noted for its historic beauty. The centerpiece of the campus is the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a grand resort built in 1888 by Henry M. Flagler, industrialist, railroad pioneer and co-founder of Standard Oil. The Ponce has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. For more on Flagler College, visit www.flagler.edu.
