STORM LAKE, IA (03/01/2019) (readMedia)-- The BVU Concert Band, under the direction of Jerry Bertrand, assistant professor of music, presents its annual Winter Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10 in Schaller Memorial Chapel.
A nautical theme runs through the program, starting with a march, "The Naval Sea Cadet March" by Joseph Olivadoti.
W. Francis McBeth's "Of Sailors and Whales," a multi-movement work based on five scenes from Herman Melville's "Moby Dick," helps highlight the performance.
"American Riversongs" by Pierre La Plante is a setting on traditional and composed music of an earlier time, when rivers and waterways represented lifelines of a growing nation.
"Their Blossoms Down" by Samuel R. Hazo draws inspiration from an old Irish blessing, while "An American Spiritual" by David R. Holsinger, appropriate for the Lenten season, is based on the well-known hymn, "Were You There."
John Wasson arranged the symphonic suite, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," which closes the concert. The 2003 Walt Disney adventure fantasy film, based on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney theme parks, was nominated for five Academy Awards.
This blockbuster hit brings with it all the swashbuckling excitement of the high seas as crews of pirates and cursed treasure join cannon blasts in this medley of themes.
This BVU Concert Band Winter Concert is free and open to the public.
