Battle of Butter Sculpture Pays Tribute to FFA at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (09/02/2011)(readMedia)-- Three teams competed in the Battle of the Butter on Sunday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

First place went to team FFA Way with their I Believe There's Nothing "Butter" than FFA sculpture created by teammates Caleb Schaapveld of Lone Tree, Paisley Conlon of Mapleton and Joshua Tucker of Denison.

Team Camp Jerry was awarded second place for their sculpture, Camping is "Butter" on the Hill. Teammates were Diane Schmidt, Aaron Knapp and Maggie Weltha, all of Des Moines, and Joane Clark of Polk City.

Third place went to team FFA Cuties for their Tribute to a Boot sculpture by teammates Colby Seward of Sloan, Hannah Ziffer of Afton, Lee Strella of Las Vegas, Nev. and Emma Wetzel of Altoona.

The Battle of the Butter was part of the festivities celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow. Teams of two to four sculptors competed daily for a chance to have their sculpture on display in the John Deere Agriculture Building, sponsored by Alliant Energy, alongside the 2011 Butter Cow. A $100 prize was awarded to the winning team each day. Judging was based on originality, creativity and use of butter.
