Bel Air native wins full-tuition scholarship to Trevecca Nazarene University

NASHVILLE, TN (03/20/2013)(readMedia)--  Alycia Alsbrooks, of Bel Air, Md., has been named one of two winners of the largest scholarship, the McClurkan Scholarship, offered at Trevecca Nazarene University, in Nashville, Tenn.

Each year Trevecca awards two McClurkan Scholarships, full-tuition scholarships to incoming freshmen who have demonstrated leadership qualities and academic excellence. Applicants for the incoming freshman class who have minimum 29 ACT or 1280 SAT and a 3.5 high school GPA and who have distinguished themselves by their leadership activities may be invited to participate in the competition; following an application and interview process, two recipients are selected. Alycia Alsbrooks and Grayson Ayres are the two McClurkan scholars for the new 2013-2014 school year.

Alsbrooks attends C. Milton Wright High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society and the Future Educators Association and has served as a senior mentor and a member of the senior class council. Additionally, she has served in leadership positions at her church. She plans to study math education.

Ayres, from Frisco, Texas, has been very active in the marching and concert bands and Young Politicians of America at Frisco High School. He serves on his church worship team, volunteers at Victim Relief Ministries, and has been a student leader on mission trips to the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. His field of study at Trevecca will be religion.

Named for J. O. McClurkan, founder of Trevecca, and begun in 2007, this scholarship is the largest one awarded to incoming freshmen.

Thirty-seven prospective freshmen competed for the 2013-2014 McClurkan Scholarships. Personnel in Trevecca's Office of Admissions were excited by the accomplishments and quality of the students who applied.

Kathryn Baugher, associate provost and dean of enrollment management, expressed the University's gratitude to those who were part of the competition for the scholarship: "The students selected to interview for the McClurkan Scholarship are among the best and brightest candidates for admission each year. Their academic credentials, their commitment to leadership and service through their demonstrated activities in high school, and their promise for the future at Trevecca were impressive. Trevecca was honored to have them interview, and University personnel were delighted to learn more about their interest in a Christian college education."
