PADUCAH, KY (11/17/2017) Todd Birdsong of Paducah was selected as the visual arts instructor for The Kentucky Center Governor's School for the Arts (GSA) preliminary round workshop that was held in Paducah at McCracken County High School on November 4, 2017. Birdsong is a photography instructor at West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Paducah School of Art and Design.

During the workshop, students were given an overview of the application process in the preliminary round and were also given individual critiques of the work they are considering for the application process for acceptance into GSA's visual arts program. An art workshop was also conducted where the students created an artwork under Birdsong's guidance.

The students who are accepted into GSA's visual art program in Louisville will focuus on three concentrations: (1) drawing and painting, (2) sculpture and ceramics and (3) traditional printmaking. Students will attend studios in all three areas throughout the program.

Special workshops will be conducted by distinguished visiting artists. Students will view and learn about the work of these artists, as well as that of their own GSA faculty. Instructors and students will critique and reflect on their works-in-progress individually and in groups, both in oral and written formats.

Studio sessions will be augmented by field trips to museums and galleries, as well as slide presentations. Students will learn about writing artist statements, art professions and careers, and portfolio preparation for college applications.

A juried gallery exhibition of student work will be displayed on the final day of the program and other student work will presented in an open house format in the rest of the studios.
