POTSDAM, NY (05/13/2015)(readMedia)-- Bradley Smoak, a bass from Cary, N.C., is among only nine rising musicians chosen from a national search to take part in the 2015 Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar.

Now in its fourth season, the Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar will feature Smoak in masterclasses and concerts from May 18 to May 24 at The Crane School of Music at The State University of New York of Potsdam. Audiences will be able to take in world-class recital performances and masterclasses throughout the week.

Metropolitan Opera star Stephanie Blythe '92 co-founded the Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar, along with Executive Director Dr. Carleen Graham, a professor of opera at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. The program, which is in residence at the College, provides a unique opportunity for emerging singers and pianists to cultivate their artistry through American art song written by living composers.

Six singers and three pianists between the ages 23 and 35 were selected from a competitive national audition to work with Blythe and Music Director Dr. Alan Louis Smith, a noted pianist, vocal coach and composer, who is also a member of the faculty at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music and at the Tanglewood Music Center. Rounding out the team is Associate Director Audrey Saccone '12, digital media manager for OPERA America in New York City.

The 2015 Fall Island participants include:

  • Aram Arakelyan, a pianist from Yerevan, Armenia
  • Stephen Carroll, a tenor from Scotch Plains, N.J.
  • Daniel Fung, a pianist from Vancouver, Canada

The nine emerging artists will take part in an immersive series of coaching sessions, masterclasses, lectures and recitals. The Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar is aimed at reinvigorating individual artistry through American art song, by hand-picking emerging artists of unique and promising ability.

Blythe will present works by special guest composer-in-residence Ricky Ian Gordon for a recital featuring his music on Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. All nine fellows, along with Blythe and Smith, will perform on the evening's program.

About the artist:

With a voice of "rich presence and power" (Opera Today), American bass Bradley Smoak has rapidly emerged as one of opera's most exciting and sought-after young talents. Currently a member of the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, he made his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut in 2014 in Strauss' "Capriccio" (Servant) and has performed in Puccini's "Tosca" (Sciarroni) and Weinberg's "The Passenger" (1st SS Officer). Recently, he returned to Opera Omaha for Beethoven's "Fidelio" (Don Fernando), after making his debut in 2013 in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" (Speaker) and Bizet's "Carmen" (Zuniga). Other principal debuts include Unsuk Chin's "Alice in Wonderland" (Mad Hatter/King of Hearts) with New York City Opera, Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" (Pirate King) with Opera Roanoke and Verdi's "Rigoletto" (Sparfucille) with Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice. A former member of the Gerdine Young Artist Program at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Smoak has also given critically acclaimed performances in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" (Masetto), "Carmen" (Zuniga), the American premiere of "Alice in Wonderland" (King of Hearts), Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" (Antonio) and Strauss' "Salome" (2nd Soldier). His return to OTSL in 2013 saw his unforgettable Pirate King, for which KDHX exclaimed, "his performance is nothing short of amazing, mixing equal parts comedy, drama, deception and bravado with a cavalier swagger that carries the production." Additional principal credits include performances with Wexford Festival Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera North, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Colorado Music Festival and DuPage Opera, among others. Upcoming engagements include "Le Nozze di Figaro" (Antonio), Berg's "Wozzeck" (Doctor, cover), and Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" (Police Commissioner, cover) at Lyric Opera of Chicago; Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (Don Basilio) at Pine Mountain Music Festival, and a return to Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2016.
