READING, PA (03/20/2013)(readMedia)-- Alvernia University student, Brandi Loga of Bel Air, Md., has been named one of only 181 Newman Civic Fellows from 36 states across the country, by Campus Compact. The award recognizes top students who are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.

As a recipient, Brandi Loga has demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. "These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can - and does - play in building stronger communities," notes Campus Compact President Maureen Curley.

Brandi Loga is a visible and respected student leader on Alvernia's campus, majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. Among many contributions, her most impressive accomplishment was her work this past fall with a large group of inner-city girls from Reading, Pa.

Loga led a team of students who designed a campus-wide Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education program delivered to 270 middle-school Girl Scouts. Not only did she recruit several dozen fellow students to serve as instructors, but she also led members of Alvernia's faculty in designing the curriculum and organizing the program. >>Read more about Brandi's project.

As students like Loga tackle community challenges, they provide fresh energy and perspective, inspire and mobilize others, and develop their own skills and potential.

Newman Civic Fellow awards are made in memory of Dr. Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating systemic change through education reform. At the core of Dr. Newman's leadership was a belief in the power of individuals to make a difference and in the power of connection with others. The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are made possible through the generous support of the KPMG Foundation.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of almost 1,200 college and university presidents who are dedicated solely to campus-based civic engagement.
