Bronx Student Jem Hughes Wins Award at University of Vermont Commencement

BURLINGTON, VT (06/11/2010)(readMedia)-- Bronx resident Jem Hughes, who graduated this year from the University of Vermont with a major in secondary education English, is the 2010 recipient of the Keith M. Miser Leadership Award. The award recognizes the student who has been successful in campus leadership endeavors. 

Hughes, who also completed a minor in political science, assumed a number of leadership roles on and off campus. These roles included serving as a resident advisor and a senior resident advisor, as well as participation in Class Council, the Black Student Union and the Emerging Leaders Program. She served as Davis Center Building Manager and was named a McNair Scholar, a Jeffords Scholar and an ALANA Mentor, and was active with Boys and Girls Club of Burlington and Spectrum One Stop.

The award was announced at the University of Vermont's 206th Commencement ceremonies on May 23, where some 2,411 students were awarded a variety of bachelor's degrees, an estimated 514 advanced degrees and certificates were awarded by the UVM Graduate College and approximately 102 women and men took the oath of Hippocrates following the awarding of their M.D. degrees.
