Bronx Youngsters Return to a Brighter, More Colorful School

Renovation and beautification by nonprofit Children for Children and Digitas

NEW YORK, NY (09/04/2007)(readMedia)-- Join students at PS 277 and IS 162 as they spend their first week of school in a more colorful environment thanks to an “extreme community makeover.” Youngsters enjoy the beautiful surroundings, which were transformed by some of the students themselves as part of a hands-on volunteer project that took place on June 28th, 2007 by Children for Children, a nonprofit organization, and Digitas, one of the country’s leading digital and direct marketing agencies.

Take a tour of PS 277 and IS 162, as well as the surrounding St. Anne’s Avenue community to see how Children for Children and Digitas transformed this school with:

PS 277

  • over 15 custom-designed large scale murals, including 10 “peace” themed murals
  • newly painted classrooms, indoor yard, and cafeteria
  • inspirational quotes painted throughout the school
  • a colorful sports mural near the gym

IS 162

  • over forty murals featuring meaningful quotes throughout the auditorium
  • a bright mural in the library computer room

This summer, Children for Children and over 600 volunteers from Digitas worked with over 150 volunteers from the school and surrounding community to complete hands-on service projects as part of the Community Service Day volunteer program. Volunteers enhanced the learning and physical environment of their school, while realizing the importance of service and community involvement.
