Bronx Youth to Participate in Global Service Fair to Make a Difference
Service Fair to feature Children for Children’s malaria awareness program Sweat for Nets™
NEW YORK, NY (04/19/2008)(readMedia)-- Children for Children (CFC), a not-for-profit organization, will motivate young people, ages 5-25, to get active in the fight against malaria on April 19, 2008. In recognition of upcoming Global Youth Service Day and World Malaria Day, CFC will be hosting a free, fun-filled afternoon of hands-on service projects at Mazzei Playground and P.S. 89 – Williamsbridge School in the Bronx, NY.
“At the Global Youth Service Fair, we will have young people and families coming together to make our community a better place,” said Caren Shapiro, assistant principal of P.S. 89. “It’s a great event because we have families from all over the world here in the Bronx, and they are coming together to think about other families all over the world.”
Although malaria is not a direct threat to children in the United States, it is a serious global issue that demands attention and action from all people around the world, especially children. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1,000,000 people, including young children, die from this treatable and preventable disease. Malaria’s effects extend far beyond local communities, as the disease breeds poverty and underdevelopment in vast regions of the world, and contributes to issues of global concern such as illegal migration and security.
CFC’s Global Youth Service Fair will feature activities that teach young people how they can help stop the spread of malaria by raising awareness and funds for the purchase of insecticide treated-bed nets for their at-risk peers around the world. The Fair will also have activities to address the issues of environmental protection, healthy eating and healthy lifestyles, as well as projects to help students identify other issues that are important to them.
