HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (09/06/2012)(readMedia)-- At Opening Convocation on Tuesday, September 4, William Burke Best, a senior at Hampden-Sydney College, received the President's Award for Overall Academic Excellence. Burke carries a grade point average of 4.0.

An Allan Scholar, Burke plays defense on the varsity lacrosse team and is Vice-Chairman of the President's Men and Treasurer of the social fraternity Kappa Sigma. He is a member of the honor societies Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Chi Beta Phi (science) and is a member of the Pre-Health Society. Burke received the same award, the President's Award for Overall Academic Excellence, at Opening Convocation in August 2011. Other awards he has received include the H. B. Overcash Award, given to an exceptional premedical student, and the Sophomore Academic Excellence Award. He has already been accepted at Eastern Virginia Medical School. A biology major, Burke is a graduate of Norfolk Academy and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Best of Virginia Beach.
