POTSDAM, NY (05/13/2011)(readMedia)-- The second edition of SUNY Potsdam's Business Case Competition was held on Friday, May 6 in Edward W. Flagg Hall. The winning team members were Kevin Cuneo-Tomasi, Michael Barry, Bakhur Khurshid and Kyle Moran, all senior undergraduate students.
For this year's competition, students were assigned the task of analyzing a global marketing case. Following an evaluation of the students' written reports, three teams proceeded to the final round of the competition, where they made presentations of their analysis and recommendation to a panel of judges.
"Business courses predominantly use cases as an effective way to disseminate knowledge and practice analytical skills. This tool enables students to think, analyze and effectively apply the knowledge gained in their coursework to actual management problems," said Dr. Peter Brouwer, dean of The School of Education and Professional Studies. "This case competition is a great platform to showcase their analytical and presentation skills."
The winning case, entitled "LG Electronics: Global Strategy in Emerging Markets," focused on the specific issues relating to Korea and LG Electronics, one of the leading consumer electronics manufacturers of the world. The case describes the challenges facing companies seeking to enter emerging markets and the important credentials that they can build in the process of understanding these settings.
"SUNY Potsdam business students consistently perform well in case competitions. Their first and runner-up finishes against other, often much larger, universities is a testament to the high standards our students achieve," said Dr. Joe Timmerman, chair of the Department of Business Administration, "As a faculty, we are committed to training and preparing our students for success in the business world."
"There is an increasing interest among our students to participate in such competitions, and they take up the challenge with enthusiasm and zeal," said M. Shahadat Hossain, who teaches marketing and organized the case competition. "This interest has prompted us to organize our own in-house case competition. It is our goal to invite other universities in the vicinity to participate in the near future."
The panel of judges included the following members of the Business Advisory Council:
- Joseph DeMart, retired director of strategic development, Kodak
- Jeff Doctor '95, CDK Consulting
- Mark Hassenplug '83, principal, Ernst & Young, LLP
- Dr. Donna Mosier, faculty member, SUNY Potsdam Department of Business Administration
