ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (02/26/2014)(readMedia)-- "In two sweeps of the radar I could tell it was going very fast. It was headed directly for the control tower." Those are the heart-pounding recollections of Mal Fuller, watch supervisor of air traffic facilities in Pittsburgh, Pa., when Flight 93 was hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001. Moments before, Ohio's Cleveland Center had notified Pittsburgh of the loss of radio contact with the fated flight. Aware of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Fuller gave the order to "evacuate the facility."
Fuller, now retired, speaks on the events of that day and the Heroes of Flight 93 at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Elizabethtown College's Gibble Auditorium in Esbenshade Hall. The program is free.
Fuller was a participant in the shutdown of the nation's airspace during the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. He now serves as a board member of the Flight 93 National Memorial.
Fuller will be joined by Ed Root, board member of Families of Fight 93, who will share memories of his loving cousin, Lorraine Bay, Flight 93 flight attendant.
