POTSDAM, NY (06/24/2015)(readMedia)-- Community Performance Series will begin its summer series with the family title "Into the Woods" from Monday, July 6 to Saturday, July 11. There will be evening performances at 7:30 p.m. each night, with afternoon matinees offered at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8 and Saturday, July 11. "Into the Woods" will be presented in the proscenium theater at SUNY Potsdam's new Performing Arts Center.

"Into the Woods" is a multi-Tony Award-winning musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The story intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests.

The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Rapunzel" and "Cinderella," as well as several others. The musical is tied together with an original story of a childless baker and his wife on their quest to begin a family. Along their journey, they encounter a witch who has placed a curse on them, and many other storybook characters that help along the way. The Disney movie adaptation of "Into the Woods," starring Meryl Streep, was a major film release this past winter.

"Together with a phenomenal cast and crew, we are set to take the stage. Our 2015 production of 'Into the Woods' offers families the opportunity to enjoy a fairy tale night at the theater. However, don't let the storybook characters fool you, Sondheim offers us a rich musical score and Lapine's book reveals a plot that is complex and very human," said CPS Executive Director Amy Flack.
