CSEA Condemns Assault on DMV Worker in Penn Yan, Calls for Stronger Protections
ALBANY, NY (03/26/2025) (readMedia)-- PENN YAN, NY – CSEA is calling for increased penalties for assaults on DMV workers following a violent incident on Friday, March 21, at the Penn Yan Road Test Site.
A DMV employee was assaulted after identifying irregularities with an applicant and accompanying driver, believed to be substitutes from a prior test. When the examiner questioned the documentation, the accompanying driver attempted to forcibly retrieve the materials and struck the worker, knocking her to the ground.
Local police responded to the scene and issued an APB for the suspects, who fled in a rental vehicle with New Jersey plates. The examiner sought medical evaluation.
"One of the most important functions of labor is protecting safety and health in our workplaces. This is a basic right that every employee should have. Over the years, CSEA has made great strides, but we still have work to do. CSEA is pushing for stronger penalties for assaults on DMV workers as part of its 2025 state budget priorities," said CSEA Statewide President Mary E. Sullivan.
