CSEA demands action after another serious work zone crash involving DOT workers
ALBANY, NY (06/11/2025) (readMedia)-- CSEA is once again calling for immediate action to protect highway workers after three union members employed by the state Department of Transportation were struck by a vehicle today while working in a marked work zone on Route 36 in Hornell.
One worker was airlifted to a hospital, while the other two were taken by ambulance to a local facility. This latest incident comes less than two weeks after the death of DOT worker and CSEA unit president Robert Bornt, who was killed in a similar work zone crash.
"On behalf of CSEA, my heart goes out to these workers, their families, and co-workers," said CSEA President Mary E. Sullivan. "These tragedies are happening far too often. Our union members are out there every day keeping our roads safe and deserve to come home to their loved ones."
CSEA heavily lobbied for the recent expansion of the state's work zone speed camera program was a positive step, but more can be done.
The union is urging passage of two bills in the final days of the legislative session:
• S.4647A / A.4015A – increases penalties for speeding in work zones
• S.4949A / A.4016A – increases penalties for failing to move over
"This legislation is a top priority for me and all CSEA members," said Sullivan. "We're fighting to impose tougher penalties on those who ignore work zones and show disregard for the people working in them. We've had enough. We need stronger laws and more accountability now."
CSEA is working closely with the New York State Police and the state Public Employee Safety and Health (PESH) Bureau to investigate this incident and support the affected workers and their families.
