CSEA demands justice for SUNY Upstate Medical University workers detained by ICE

SYRACUSE (10/29/2025) (readMedia)-- CSEA is deeply disturbed by reports that two SUNY Upstate Medical University employees were detained by ICE earlier today while attending their immigration hearings in good faith to finalize their legal status. Before they could even enter the courtroom, both were taken into custody and now face possible deportation.

These are dedicated employees who have served New York State since, respectively, 2022 and 2024. One is a CSEA member, and the other is represented by UUP. They are valued members of the Upstate community. Detaining people who are following lawful processes is both unjust and inhumane and sends a message of intimidation to all immigrants trying to do things the right way.

"They are part of our Upstate family, they are our co-workers, our neighbors, and valued contributors to the hospital and community," said CSEA President Mary E. Sullivan. "No one should be punished for following the law. Our union members and all hospital employees deserve dignity, respect and the chance to live and work without fear."

CSEA stands in solidarity with these workers and calls for fair, humane, and transparent immigration practices that reflect the values of justice and compassion our nation claims to uphold.
