CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Though Memorial Day is still several weeks away, the committee planning this year's observance needs your immediate assistance.

Plans are to recognize, as part of the ceremony on Monday, May 30, the families of all those from Taylor County killed during war. Your help in identifying those families is needed, according to Charlie Shaw, the head of the committee.

There are 68 names on the Taylor County War Memorial located on the courthouse grounds. That memorial lists those from Taylor County killed during World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam.

"We want family members to be in the parade and at the ceremony later to receive roses in honor of their loved ones," Shaw said. "We need the public's help in identifying those family members. We do not want to leave anyone out."

If a family member is not present, the roses will be placed on the memorial, Bill Perkins, a member of the committee, said.

"We really need the public's help," Perkins said. "Memorial Day honors our war dead, and we certainly do not want to overlook any family members. Please contact us if you have any information at all."

Shaw can be reached at (270) 572-6161, and Perkins can be reached at (270) 789-2305.

Bobby Baker, who is also a member of the committee, needs to get in contact with veterans who are members of such organizations as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

"We would like to have as many members of those organizations present in uniform as possible," Baker said. "We also want to go ahead and make contact with them so we can make adequate plans for the parade at 1 p.m. and the memorial ceremony at 2 p.m."

Baker can be reached at bobbybaker151@gmail.com.

Displays are planned in the display windows on Main Street in Campbellsville and in the Campbellsville Civic Center.

The idea is for families of veterans and veterans to display any memorabilia they might have. Shaw asked members of the public to go ahead and determine what they might want to display.

"We would also like those with items to call us as soon as possible so adequate space can be made available for everyone," Shaw said.

Kathleen Tucker at Tucker Diamonds & Gold Inc. is coordinating the window displays downtown. She may be reached at (270) 789-8462. Those with items they would like to display at the Civic Center should contact Perkins.
