Campbellsville University offers a variety of summer camps in June, July

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY (04/16/2015)(readMedia)-- Is your child interested in music? Or theater? Or what about softball, football, worship and a variety of other topics? Campbellsville University offers several summer camps that give youngsters an opportunity to explore these options.

During June and July, different camps are being offered to expose youth and high school students to the various topics on the campus of Campbellsville University.

Camps include: Campbellsville University Chamber Music Camp, June 7-9; Campbellsville University Kids College Day Camp, June 8-11 and July 13-15; Campbellsville University Youth Theater Camp, June 8-13; Campbellsville University Hunter Cantwell QB and Skills Player Football Camp, June 13; Campbellsville University Lil Tiger Softball Day Camp, June 16 and 17; and Campbellsville University Journeys Camp, July 19-21 and July 22-14.

Also, there is a new Summer Communication Institute, sponsored by Forcht Broadcasting and Campbellsville University-Somerset, at the Larry and Beverly Noe Somerset Education Center.

The Chamber Music Camp, which is new this year, is open to all high school woodwind, brass, string, piano and vocal students, rising freshmen through outgoing seniors. Campers will be placed in chamber ensembles and have rehearsal sessions with the CU School of Music faculty, individual and group practice times, master classes, sessions in music theory and history, evening concerts and a final recital featuring the student chamber ensembles.

All campers will be provided music and meals, and campers can choose to commute to campus (for $100) or stay in the residence halls (at $100).

Another new camp this year is the Journeys Camp July 19-21 and July 22-24. This camp is a very broad camp where sixth through 12 grade students will enjoy worship, music, art, basketball, flag football, Ultimate Frisbee, soccer and beach volleyball.

Each camp is three days and two nights. The camp is a product of Campbellsville University's Church Outreach.

The cost is $125 per camper that covers all meals, lodging, a T-shirt and a "goody" bag. June 15 is the preregistration date for T-shirt sizes and count of those attending; however, registration will be available all the way up to the date of the camp.

Kids College Day Camp is June 8-11 from 9 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. and July 13-15 from 1 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Some of the classes to be offered involve science, archery and cooking.

Kids College provides students in grades third through eighth with opportunities to broaden the scope of their interests and interact with other young people.

Campbellsville University, along with Missoula Children's Theater Camp and Town Hall Productions, is also offering a CU Youth Theater Camp June 8-13 for rising first grade through rising high school seniors. The Missoula Children's Theater will be sending two professional directors, along with all the sets, lights, costumes and expertise needed to stage a full-length one-hour production at the end of the week.

There will be three theatrical enrichment workshops during the week as well. The camp offers live theater experience, enrichment workshops, art education, team building and memories.

Auditions for the production, which is "The Jungle Book," will be Monday, June 8 at 9 a.m., and students must be present at the audition to participate in the camp. The daily schedule will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday-Friday. There will be a 7 p.m. performance of the show Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13 at 2:30 p.m.

Cost for the camp is $150 for the first child and $100 for each additional sibling. There are also possible scholarship opportunities. Children are welcome to bring their own lunch or purchase the meal of the day, provided by local vendors, for $4 per day.

A Hunter Cantwell QB and Skills Player Football Camp is scheduled June 13 with Hunter Cantwell, CU's quarterback coach and former University of Louisville and National Football League quarterback, Perry Thomas, head football coach, and other CU football coaches.

The camp is for sixth through 12 grade quarterbacks and wide receivers. The Saturday camp is from 7:30 a.m. when registration begins at Hawkins Athletic Complex and ends at 4 p.m. with an awards ceremony.

Campers will learn body control, football, proper fundamentals, quickness, etc. Campers are to bring tennis shoes and football cleats and their own football.

The camp costs $75 per individual camper that includes lunch and a camp T-shirt. Teams that bring 10 or more will receive a 20 percent discount per player. There is a $50 deposit that is non-refundable.

The Lil Tiger Softball Day Camp will be offered June 16-17 for ages 12 and under. Check in is at 8:30 a.m. June 16 and will be both days from 9 a.m. until noon.

Participants need to bring tennis or turf shoes, glove, helmet, bat and batting gloves if you have. Catchers should bring full equipment if campers have. Students need to make sure everything is clearly labeled. Cost is $50 with no refunds.

In Somerset, Campbellsville University and Forcht Broadcasting and partnering for the first Summer Communication Institute in Somerset, Ky., at the Larry and Beverly Noe Somerset Education Center.

Dr. Keith Spears, vice president for graduate and professional studies, said there will the classes are for high school juniors and seniors, Somerset Community College students, adult and transfer students.

There will be two classes a day from 8 a.m. until noon Monday-Thursday from June 8 through July 9.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for high school students, community college students or adults who want to explore communications as a career or gain some college credits. It is putting their down time of summer to work for them," Spears said.

"We are getting calls from juniors and seniors in high school who want to get a jump start toward their college career and other inquires from community people who just want to hone their communication skills," he said.

"We are very pleased to partner with Forcht Broadcasting in our Summer Communication Institute," he said. "They bring a strong component to this schedule of courses. Having professional communicators in the institute gives it a cutting edge approach that raises the bar."

Classes will be offered in Composition I; Christ, Culture and Social Media; Business Management; Producing Films for the Internet; Photography; Introduction to Communication and two levels of Broadcasting and Digital Media courses.
