Campbellsville University offers allied health certificate programs

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY (07/26/2016)(readMedia)-- Campbellsville University offers four allied health certificate programs, including state registered nurse aide (SRNA), phlebotomy technician, pharmacy technician and medical assistant, at locations in Harrodsburg, Hodgenville and Campbellsville.

Classes start in August, September, October and December in 2016 and some in January, March and April 2017.

Allied health facilitator Christie Minor said allied health programs are for students who are eager to enter the job market, and they know a four-year degree is not for them.

"With certification in any track in the medical field, you have a good chance of finding a job," Minor, who coordinates the programs, said.

"Right now, nurse aide positions are the most in demand," she said.

To become a SRNA, you must complete 59 classroom hours, and 16 hours of clinical. Nurse aides care for residents/patients in long term care and hospital settings as well as in-home care. They obtain vital signs and assist nurses with basic care needs.

The phlebotomy technician course requires 50 hours of instructional time, and a minimum of 100 hours and sticks during clinical time. Phlebotomy students will learn how to draw blood, label the specimens correctly and prepare and assemble equipment needed for venipuncture.

Phlebotomists can find work in hospitals, outpatient labs, blood donation centers and doctor offices.

To earn a certificate in medical assistant, the student must complete the 6 month, 350- hour course including a clinical rotation in a medical office setting. Medical assistants can find jobs in physician offices such as primary care or specialty offices. Medical assistants administer injections, obtain vital signs, schedule appointments and record information into Medical record.

The pharmacy technician course is an online program students have one year to complete but can be completed sooner at the student's pace. Pharmacy technicians can be employed by hospitals and pharmacies. The pharmacy technician program teaches students how to assist the pharmacist with filling patient prescriptions.

The pharmacy technician program is online, and there will be an orientation program for those who have registered and will be completing the program. There will be a session at each of the university's locations.

Courses are available at the Campbellsville location at 119 Nancy Cox Drive in Campbellsville; the Harrodsburg location at 1150 Danville Road in Harrodsburg and the Hodgenville location at 813 Old Elizabethtown Road.

Phlebotomy classes include: Sept. 20-Dec. 16, Tuesday and Thursday, 1-4 p.m.; and April 24-July 17, 2017, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.;

Medical assistant classes include: July 12-Jan. 6, 2017, Tuesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Thursday, 1-4 p.m.
