Campbellsville University to celebrate Earth Day Friday, April 21

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY (04/18/2017) (readMedia)-- Campbellsville University will celebrate Earth Day in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, April 21 at the Turner Log Cabin at 505 N. Columbia Ave., Campbellsville, Ky.

Dr. Michael V. Carter, president of Campbellsville University, will be present, along with Tony Young, mayor of Campbellsville, and Eddie Rogers, Taylor County judge-executive, who will give a proclamation for Earth Day.

Earth Stewardship Awards will be presented.

Roberta Burnes, who works for the Division of Air Quality in Frankfort, Ky., has agreed to be present with her company issued electric hybrid car. It is colorful and anyone can look under the hood.

Carla Goldsmith, area retail operations manager for LG&E/KU, will be present. KU has been a long-time supporter of CU's environmental education efforts at Clay Hill. They have provided $10,000 annually to support Campbellsville University's KU Day with a Scientist. This brings area students to Clay Hill Memorial Forest to learn from professional scientists.

Among the school groups present will be students from Kentucky Christian Academy. An oak tree and flowers will be planted.

KU has also provided financial support for the university's Trail of Trees program, which plants native trees to support biodiversity, animal habitats, reduce storm water run-off and improve air quality. Campbellsville University's Trail of Trees project aligns closely to KU's "Right Tree, Right Place" initiative.

Also on April 21, the Taylor County Public Library is holding an Earth Day celebration from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. with Earth Day crafts and limeade. Dog-Earned Books will have an environment themed Open Mic Night April 21 from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. After 8 p.m. on April 21, Campbellsville Main Street will be presenting the movie "Hoot" which is free, and everyone is invited.

Campbellsville University's Women's Alliance will celebrate Earth Day Saturday, April 22 with an emphasis on Clay Hill Memorial Forest. Women interested in attending should contact Natalie Burdette at nrburdette@campbellsville.edu or at (270) 789-5182.

The rain date for the Earth Day Celebration is 10 a.m. Monday, April 24.

Also, on Friday, April 28, there will be a bee talk with a scientist at the Taylor County Extension Office.
