Candice Giffin, NAU junior from Phoenix, finalist for prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship

FLAGSTAFF, AZ (03/11/2013)(readMedia)-- Candice Giffin of Phoenix, AZ, is a finalist for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Giffin, a junior at Northern Arizona University, is one of 200 countrywide finalists for this prestigious academic scholarship.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is considered quite an honor for the student as well as the University. The Truman awards its winners $30,000 each for graduate studies in preparation for careers in public service. The Truman Foundation received 629 applications from 293 colleges and universities this year. The Finalist Selection Committee selected 199 candidates from 126 colleges and universities as finalists. Candice is one of only five students from Arizona who will interview March 18 in Phoenix. About one quarter of finalists will be selected as winners. Each finalist will interview with others from their home state during the Regional Review Panels.

NAU has had four Truman Scholars in the past, all between 1977 and 1983. The first winner was Ernie Calderon, former president of ABOR.
