QUEENSBURY, NY (05/21/2012)(readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Capt. Michael Manss, a Guilderland resident and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, has taken command of the 1427th Transportation Company in Queensbury.

Manss, who works as a full-time employee of the New York National Guard's logistics office, assumed command from Capt. John Klimes during a change-of-command ceremony on Saturday, May 19.

Manss, a quartermaster officer, deployed to Afghanistan with the New York Army National Guard in 2008. He served in an Embedded Training Team (ETT) providing training and advice to Afghan National Army Soldiers.

He earned the Combat Action Medal which is awarded to Soldiers who engage the enemy.

His other awards include the Afghan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal as well as the New York State Physical Fitness Medal.

The 1427th Transportation Company is equipped to carry military equipment long distances on Army tractor-trailer rigs.

During the New York National Guard's response to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in August and September the Soldiers of the 1427th transported critical supplies from one end of the state to the other.

The 1427th Transportation Company is based at the New York National Guard Readiness Center at 65 Stone Quarry Road.
