ASHLAND, OH (09/26/2012)(readMedia)-- Elyria resident Cassandra Nix, who is an environmental/biology major at Ashland University, has been awarded a $2,500 per semestersa scholarship through the American Chemical Society Scholars Program. Nix, a 2010 graduate of Midview High School, is the daughter of William and Margaret Nix.
Nix is one of two Ashland University recipients of the scholarship from the American Chemical Society Scholars Program, which was awarded for 2012. She found out about the scholarship program through a friend, who had received it previously and was involved in AU's American Chemical Society Student Affiliates group with Nix.
"The requirements for the scholarship include a minority background, a major in the chemical sciences, a minimum GPA and two letters of recommendation," Nix said. "After the application process, I was in email correspondence with the director of the scholarship program to answer any other questions."
The scholarship is renewable every year as long as the student keeps the same major and meets the GPA requirements. This scholarship can potentially be received for every year of college if applied for during freshman year of college.
The American Chemical Society (ACS) program awards are renewable scholarships of up to $5,000 to underrepresented students who want to enter the fields of chemistry or chemistry related fields. The ACS Scholars Program was established in 1994 to attract African American, Hispanic and American Indian students considered underrepresented in the chemical sciences by the National Science Foundation to pursue careers in the field.
