Celebrate Native American Heritage Month at GCC's Rosalie "Roz" Steiner Art Gallery

BATAVIA, NY (11/01/2016)(readMedia)-- November is Native American Heritage Month and to celebrate, the Rosalie "Roz" Steiner Art Gallery and the Alfred C O'Connell Library at Genesee Community College will host a month-long schedule of special events in appreciation. The Gallery proudly presents Celebration of Native American Heritage, which will run from Thursday, November 10, 2016 – Friday, December 16, 2016 and feature a diverse collection of regional artifacts on loan from the Rochester Museum and Science Center and the Historical Club of the Tonawanda Reservation, artwork by Carson Waterman and Heritage Quilts by Faye Lone as well as several lectures, workshops and events held throughout November to celebrate Native American Month.

The Celebration of Native American Heritage schedule of events at GCC includes the following:

Thursday, November 10, 2016, 12:30 – 2 p.m. & 5 – 7 p.m. / Roz Steiner Art Gallery / T102

• Receptions with artists Carson Waterman and Faye Lone will begin the celebration. Waterman is a Seneca Native American from the Snipe Clan. He is one of the premier artists of the Iroquois Confederacy which spans what is now known as New York State and his artwork is a deep reflection on his Seneca heritage. His paintings draw upon the relationships between Mother Earth and all living things, which are critical to the underlying traditional Seneca spiritual beliefs found in the Gaiwiio ("the Good World"). Lone is an award-winning art quilter and member of the Tonawanda Band of Senecas. Her works can be found in the permanent collections of museums, including the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. In addition to the two artists' receptions, Gary Sundown will give a presentation on a Native American film at 7 p.m. in room T102 of the Conable Technology Building.

• Terry Abrams will give a presentation on Native American Veterans from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery. Gary Sundown will return to discuss Native American film at 7 p.m. in the Art Gallery.

Thursday, November 17, 2016, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. & 7 p.m. / College Forum

• Wayne Abrams will bring fun and excitement to the College Forum with a presentation on Native American dance. Join him to learn more about the dance culture and learn a few moves! The Forum will also host a Native American Social beginning at 7 p.m.

• The College Library will host a corn husk doll workshop, limited to the first 20 people. Story teller and writer Joe Bruchac will visit GCC for a pair of readings, meeting at 12:30 p.m. in the College Forum and again at 7 p.m. in the Art Gallery. Bruchac has been creating poetry, short stories, novels, anthologies and music that reflect his Native American heritage and traditions for over thirty years. He has authored more than 120 books for children and adults, including best-selling Keepers of the Earth: Native American Stories and Environmental Activities for Children.

• Experience All Things Lacrosse at the Roz Steiner Art Gallery. Nek Jonathan will be on hand to demonstrate stick making, and professional lacrosse players will make a special appearance to speak about the sport and its Native American roots. The 2016 NJCAA National Champion GCC men's lacrosse team will also be recognized. The Cougars captured the College's first national championship in men's lacrosse and second title in school history.

In addition to the events at the GCC Batavia Campus Center, a print of Ernest Smith's paintings created for the RMSC's 1930's Indian Arts project will be on display at the Medina campus, 11470 Maple Ridge Rd., Medina, in November and at the Albion campus, 456 West Ave., Albion, in January.
