LA MIRADA, CA (05/22/2014)(readMedia)-- Tess Van Grouw is an incoming freshman and an outstanding defender. Well, she was named "Girl's Volleyball Outstanding Defender" by the Fresno Bee in the fall.
She enters Biola this fall and will have an immediate impact as a defensive specialist/libero along the Eagles' back row. She played three years of varsity high school volleyball at Central Valley Christian and will fit right in with the current mix of Biola volleyball players.
"I am excited to have her because she is a perfect fit for Biola," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "She loves Jesus and she is a stud on the volleyball court. She is legit good."
She led the Cavs to three league titles in the Central Sequoia League, and she also helped them earn a CIF Central Section Championship in 2011. In 2013 her squad was the CIF State Division III runner-up.
She has a deep connection with Biola as she played for former Biola All-American Meghan Warkentin at Central Valley Christian, and she played with current Biola All-American, Amy Weststeyn.
The tutelage of those players helped Van Grouw earn all-league first team and all-county first team honors in her time with the Cavs.
"One main thing that made me choose to play at Biola was how comfortable I felt. That mostly had to do with the way all the girls and coaches treated me on my first visit," said Van Grouw. "They are the sweetest, most tight-knit group of people, and their love for the Lord is evident. I am so excited to be a part of the Biola volleyball team, but I am most looking forward to minoring in Bible."
Van Grouw hit the books hard in high school, earning a spot on the high honor roll. She intends to major in kinesiology and eventually begin a career as a nurse. Catch her on the court starting in mid-August.
