DANVILLE, KY (01/20/2014)(readMedia)-- Kim Lownds of Evergreen, a senior at Centre College, is interested in pursuing a career in education, and has traveled and taught extensively as part of her own education at Centre. This January term she traveled to Comayagua, Honduras, for a unique educational opportunity at El Alba Bilingual School.
The three-week January term between traditional semesters gives students and faculty the flexibility to explore specific subjects intensively. Many students stay on campus to immerse themselves in a certain subject; others travel abroad with classes in faraway places; still other students, such as Lownds, use CentreTerm to complete internships.
Lownds assisted teachers, instructed students and managed a tutoring center.
She came to the internship with prior international travel and education experience, having studied abroad in Costa Rica, and felt ready for the challenge of teaching and working abroad.
"My experience in Costa Rica was incredibly helpful because I was completely immersed in the Spanish language," she says. "It definitely helped me prepare for the wide presence of Spanish in Honduras."
Lownds is the daughter of Steven and Mary Jo Lownds of Evergreen and is a graduate of Evergreen High School.
